In the summer following their freshman year, students will learn about
product mix, quality and customer issues in the Quality Control Department.
In the Production/Process Department, they will gain a basic understanding
of how plants and mobile equipment operate. Students will also gain hands-on
experience in plant facilities.
SOPHOMORE SUMMER
After their sophomore year, students will learn about plant and mobile
maintenance. They will also have an up close look at drilling practices
and the use of explosives, and they will begin to understand sales through
hands-on-experience in scale operations, ticketing, billing and customer
relations.
JUNIOR SUMMER
Once their junior year is complete, students
return to Vulcan for a more in-depth look at mine planning, process improvements
and capital improvements in the Engineering Department. They will begin
to understand pit development and stripping. In the Production Department,
interns will learn the processes involved in producing and crushing stone.
In the sales arena, Junior level interns begin to learn the importance
of budgeting and the value of selling and marketing.
5TH YEAR SUMMER (if applicable)
In some instances, a fifth
year summer internship is offered. At this level, interns gain valuable
hands on experience in actual project work in the Engineering Department
and they are exposed to more advanced maintenance and upkeep practices.
