Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges
For over 39 consecutive years, the Mideast Division of Vulcan Materials has been a significant contributor to the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges. The VFIC represents 15 leading private colleges and universities in Virginia that provide small classes, personal attention to students and a time-tested liberal arts experience.
In 2005, Vulcan established
the Vulcan Materials Scholars Program with the VFIC. Through its annual
contribution, one student at each of the 15 schools receives a scholarship.
Through this program, Vulcan helps ensure that the world has both a well
prepared workforce and well rounded citizens ready to take leadership
roles in the future.
Vulcan also participates
in the annual VFIC "Ethics Bowl". This event draws business leaders, civic
leaders and students from all VFIC schools throughout the Commonwealth
to discuss and debate a wide variety of current issues.
Veterans Memorial
In March of 2005,
the Stokesdale, NC community organized a committee to start a fundraiser
for a veterans' memorial project. The committee approached Vulcan and
asked if they could build the memorial inside the Stokesdale community
walking track, which has served the community for several years at the
Stokesdale Quarry. The committee felt it was one of the nicest areas within
Stokesdale. The memorial contains seven flags for every branch of the
military, a granite table and benches engraved with each branch of the
military. The memorial was dedicated on Veterans Day in honor of all veterans.
There were over 200 attendees including Congressman Howard Coble, Mayor
John Flynt of Stokesdale, countless veterans and members of the news media.
A patriotic music medley was performed to celebrate the occasion. The
Marines honored the veterans with a solo of TAPS, the laying of a wreath
and a 21-gun salute.
Butterfly Garden
In June of 2005, employees
from the Pineville, NC Quarry joined forces with volunteers from Sterling
Elementary School to build a butterfly garden. Sterling Elementary is
a local Charlotte school, adopted by the Pineville Quarry (Vulcan has
adopted more than 170 schools nationwide). The concept of a butterfly
garden came from a teacher at Sterling, and with Vulcan's financial assistance
and willing labor force, it became a reality. In less than four hours,
the garden area went from a space tilled and covered with plastic to a
finished product. The garden includes a bird feeder, blue-bird house,
resting bench, walking path and over sixty plants.
Throughout the school year, teachers and students benefit from using the garden as both a teaching tool and a point of activity for watching the behavior of the butterflies and birds that frequent the garden. During the summer, the school's custodial staff keeps water and a close eye on the garden.
Other activities with the school have revolved around field trips to the quarry; providing resources for the accelerated reader program; wildlife kits and tours for their earth science program; donating teacher appreciation gifts and sponsoring a basketball fundraiser that helped to purchase uniforms for the players.
Employer Support of the Guard Reserve
Vulcan supports the
Employer Support of the Guard Reserve (ESGR) organization by participating
in various events they sponsor. In December 2004 for example, the Mideast
Division was a part of the Boss Lift, an event where employers and community
leaders tour a military base or shipyard and observe guardsmen and reservists
executing annual training exercises.
The Mideast Division also provided sponsorships for service members and their spouses to attend the Annual Employer Recognition Banquet with each of their employers. Service members were recognized at the Banquet and received ESGR Above and Beyond Awards.
In 2005, Vulcan's
Mideast Division was selected as the top Employer of Guardsmen and Reservists
for North Carolina. On January 28, 2006 Vulcan was recognized for this
honor at the Employer Recognition Banquet in Concord, NC.
Vulcan was honored
by Winston-Salem, NC Mayor Allen Joines and the Winston-Salem Board of
Alderman at a public board meeting earlier this year. A proclamation was
made acknowledging Vulcan as an exceptional corporate citizen through
their support of the community and the North Carolina Guardsmen and Reservists.
